From Your First Idea to Your Finished Countertops

When it comes to choosing stone countertops, it’s not only about the slab—it’s about the whole experience. At Highland Stone, we guide you through every step of the process with honesty, patience, and a real understanding of how much this means to you.

Whether you are building a dream kitchen from scratch, remodeling a dated bathroom, or finally getting the outdoor kitchen you’ve always wanted, our job is to make sure everything fits just right—your space, your style, your budget, and your schedule.

Let’s walk through how it works and what you can expect from us.

Large project? We handle commercial and multi-unit installations with the same craft and care.

"Be faithful to your own taste, because nothing you really like is ever out of style."

— Billy Baldwin, New York interior decorator

The Process

Step 1: Getting Started

Many of our clients come to us through word of mouth. And some reach out here on our website. If that's you, or if a friend recommended us, or someone passes along your info to us, before you know it, we’re texting or talking about your project. Sometimes you already know exactly what you want. Other times you just know you need something better than what you’ve got. Either way, we’re ready.

If your space is still in the design phase or your cabinets haven’t been installed yet, we’ll usually work from your cabinet drawings. But if everything’s already in place, we’ll come out and measure—sometimes that same day or the next, and always within a few days. The goal? Make sure we understand your space before we even start talking materials.

Step 2: Selecting Your Stone

Some of our customers already have a stone in mind (and that’s great). However, if you’re still deciding, we’ll connect you with one of the local wholesalers we trust. We don’t stock a showroom full of slabs—that’s by design. It lets us focus on fabrication and installation while pointing you toward the places that offer the best selection and pricing in the Charleston area.

We’ll help you narrow down your choices and walk you through what to expect from each type of stone. Once you’ve picked your slabs, we collect a deposit equal to their cost, and we’re off and running.

What do we have in inventory? We usually have a selection of solid white and black slabs of various materials and several different types of remnants (not just black or white) that are great for smaller jobs like vanities or fireplace surrounds.

Step 3: Templates + Fabrication

Once the stone is secured, we come back out for templating. That’s a fancy way of saying we take very precise measurements of your space, including cutouts for sinks, faucets, cooktops—whatever you need.

We’ll ask for your sink at this stage too, so we can make sure everything fits down to the millimeter. If you haven’t bought one yet, we’ll help guide you there, too. Some clients prefer to choose from our in-stock options:

Kitchen Sinks: 16-gauge stainless steel undermounts, available in a single bowl or 50/50 double bowl.

Vanity Sinks: Available in white or beige, oval or rectangular. We carry standard sizes and can help you source special ones online if needed.

Not exactly sure what you prefer? We often suggest Amazon for speed and selection. If you order online, just have the sink shipped directly to us—we’ll take it from there.

Step 4: Installation Day

Installation usually happens about two to three weeks after templating. By this stage of the process, we’ve double-checked everything. Our team (not a third-party subcontractor) handles the install from start to finish. You probably already know that when everyone working on your home is part of the same team, things go more smoothly.

We're careful, respectful of your space, and precise in everything we do. Working with natural stone means dealing with real materials that don’t always behave predictably. But we take every precaution to make sure your countertops arrive and install intact.

We also offer:

Bar Drops: Want to remove that raised bar and create one level counter? We can do that.

Electrical Outlet Relocation: Need to move a few outlets for your new layout? We've got someone for that.

Plumbing Coordination: If you don’t already have a plumber lined up, we can take care of that too—so you can start using your kitchen the same day it’s installed.

Your Home, Your Way

We’re big believers that your home should reflect you. That’s why our design consultations are never pushy, never rushed. Whether you need help matching stone to your cabinets or want advice on what’s best for a busy family kitchen versus a rental property, we’ll give you honest input and real-life experience.

If there’s a better, faster, or more affordable way to get the look and functionality you’re after—we’ll tell you. If something doesn't go according to plan (it happens sometimes), we’ll make it right. We’ve even taken losses on projects before to be sure that we always stand by our word.
